The New Year is here, and with it comes a fresh start – the perfect time to set goals that boost both your well-being and your dog's. Let’s embrace resolutions that strengthen your bond and improve your health. Here’s how you can make this New Year one to remember, with a little help from your furry friend and the Biscuit app.
Turn Walks into Wins
Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active, and it’s even better with your dog by your side. Set achievable walking goals using the Biscuit app to track your progress and earn rewards as you go. The Quests feature adds a layer of fun, encouraging you to explore new routes, try different times of the day, and make walking a consistent part of your new year routine.
Tip:
Start with short walks, then try multiple short walks and gradually increase the duration until it becomes easier. Mix in different paces to your walk – brisk walks are great for burning off those Christmas treats, but there’s nothing wrong with a stroll in the crisp fresh winter air too. Every little helps!
Stay Warm and Comfortable
January’s chill doesn’t have to keep you indoors. Wrapping up warm is key for enjoyable walks. Invest in a sturdy winter coat for yourself and consider one for your dog too, especially if they’re a breed that feels the cold.
Tip:
Take advantage of January sales to snag a cosy dog coat at a bargain price. It’s practical and ensures your pup stays snug on chilly adventures.
When Is It Too Cold to Walk Your Dog?
Knowing when it’s too cold to head outdoors is important for your dog’s safety. As a rule of thumb, if it’s uncomfortably cold for you, it’s likely the same for your pup - so around 5°C. Small breeds, short-haired dogs, and senior dogs are especially sensitive to the cold and should avoid being walked in temperatures around 0°C, though breeds such as the Husky and Bernese Mountain Dogs are built for it so won’t struggle in the same way. Know your dog and consider whether they want to go out. Anything below -6°C (20°F) can be risky without proper protection so it’s important to not spend too much time outside and prevent health risks such as cracked paws, pads and noses. If your dog starts lifting their paws, whining or stopping while out on walks it could be because their feet are too cold. Getting some doggy winter boots for them to wear can be a good way to help protect their paws – but they’ll probably need to be introduced slowly and positively first!
What to Do Instead:
Keep the walks short (under 30 mins) and during the warmest hours of the day (10am-2pm) if you can but if it’s too chilly for a walk, keep your dog entertained indoors. Brain games and activities like playing with toys, sniff-and-find games, treat-dispensing puzzles, or wrapping some kibble or treats into an old tea-towel and tying it up, are great for burning energy and keeping them occupied.
Tip:
Set up an indoor agility course with household items, or use this as training time to sharpen your dog’s obedience skills in the house. These activities provide mental stimulation and physical exercise, even on the coldest days.
Make New Habits Stick
They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. Biscuit makes it easier by turning your resolutions into rewards. Log daily activities like walks, health checks, and routines to keep motivated. Use streaks and challenges in the app to stay on track – complete your Quests journey and get a good streak going!
Action Tip:
Set a reminder on your phone to start the Biscuit app for your daily walk until you naturally don’t leave the house without it. Consistency is key to making health-focused habits last.
Walk Off Christmas Indulgence
We all indulge over the holidays – mince pies, extra chocolates, extra gravy bones – it’s part of the fun! Now it’s time to balance it out. Walking with your dog not only helps you shed extra calories but also gives your pup the exercise they love and need too.
Action Tip:
Try “interval walking” where you alternate between fast and slow walking. It’s more effective for calorie burn and keeps the walk interesting for your dog.
Share Your Goals with the Biscuit Community
One of the best motivators is a sense of community. Share your progress, inspire others, and even pick up some tips from fellow Biscuit users. Knowing others are rooting for you can make all the difference.
