The Biscuit app has been in the news as our data on dog names in the UK hit the headlines. The Daily Mail featured: Is your pooch called Luna, Bella or Milo? Huge survey reveals the most popular dog names in the UK - as 'classics' like Fido and Rex fall out of fashion
Fido, Rex, and Rover have long been the go-to names for our furry friends, but times are changing! Modern dog owners are opting for more trendy and stylish names for their pups.
Our Biscuit App data has unveiled the current favourite dog names chosen by UK owners. Topping the list is 'Luna,' likely inspired by the character from the Harry Potter series, followed closely by Bella and Milo.

"Luna is immensely popular, with one in every 72 dogs being named Luna," says Claire Greenyer, co-founder of Biscuit Pet Care. "We recommend new dog owners pick simple two-syllable names ending in a vowel to help their pets recognise when they're being called, and Luna fits this perfectly. Plus, the influence of popular culture, like Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, can't be ignored."
Interestingly, the line between dog and human names is becoming less distinct, with many popular choices being traditional human names such as Poppy, Daisy, and Alfie.
For those looking for more unique names, we found less owners opting for Bruno, Ralph, Oscar, and Dexter now, which were less common. Greenyer also proposes some truly unique names like 'Cornflakes,' 'Goat,' and 'Mozzarella,' which have been used by Biscuit app users.
Statistically, one in every 72 dogs is named Luna, one in every 78 is Bella, and one in every 92 is Milo. Maybe Milo's popularity could be attributed to the character in the 1994 film 'The Mask,' starring Jim Carrey, or the Tweenies?
While Luna tops the overall list, individual breeds show different preferences. Luna is the favorite for nine breeds, including Labrador Retriever, Border Collie, and Golden Retriever. Bella leads for five breeds, such as Beagle, Bulldog, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Milo is the top choice for three breeds, including Jack Russell Terrier and Cocker Spaniel. Interestingly, Lola is the most popular name for small breeds like Chihuahua and Pug.
The data also highlights the UK's favourite dog breeds according to our Biscuit app users. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular, making up 8.1% of UK dogs, followed by Cocker Spaniel (6.8%), Cockapoo (5.9%), Dachshund (3.8%), French Bulldog (3.2%), Border Collie (2.8%), Staffordshire Bull Terrier (2.6%), Jack Russell Terrier (2.3%), Chihuahua (2.2%), and mixed breeds (2.2%).
